1. The Wardrobe Edit
You may be surprised just how many pieces will work for you during those nine months and post-pregnancy. But my advice is to remove everything that won’t fit in the foreseeable future. It might be your favourite skinny jeans or your body-con Saturday night dress but don’t worry it’s only on a sabbatical! If you pack those items away, they won’t dishearten you every time you open the wardrobe door. A simplified wardrobe where everything works separately and together means outfit building is no longer a stress.
2. Go Prairie
The prairie/floaty dress trend is good for you as are A-line shapes.
Stretchy knitted skirts and dresses can look amazing as can bias-cut slip dresses and skirts.
3. Have Fun!
Embrace the oversized shirt and knitwear trend. Check out what is inside your partner’s wardrobe too, you may find some fabulous shirts that would look great on you!
4. Invest in Accessories
Beautiful bags, totes and fashion jewellery in your best colours will all lift your spirits. They will also help style up your maternity outfits and last well beyond pregnancy. Some pretty bracelets and bangles will draw attention to your wrists (your slimmest part!). Pendants will slim your silhouette. Two of my favourite fashion jewellery destinations are Lovisa (Trinity centre Leeds) and Bijouled (Harrogate).
5. Ditch The Vertiginous Heels
Switch them for moderate block-heeled shoes, ankle-boots and espadrilles.
Combat/hiking boots are still massively on-trend (and super-comfy).
Pointy toe flats will slim your feet and look feminine and elegant with both dresses and trousers.
6. Embrace Sport Luxe
Stretchy leggings and comfy trainers (e.g. Stan Smiths) are your friends.
Smarten up your look with fun trainers in your best accent colours, classic white, on-trend nude or still fashionable animal print.
7. Up The Blazer
Wear an unbuttoned blazer, trench, biker or denim jacket. This will slim your silhouette and create an elegant look.
If you wear one colour head to toe and a coat or jacket in a contrasting colour on top you will look taller and slimmer.
8. Curated Comfort
Waist extenders (available at Amazon) will allow you to keep going with your existing trousers and skirts as long as possible.
However, there are some great High Street pregnancy collections.
My current favourite is Zara with some beautiful cotton sundresses and jumpsuits.
Maternity jeans and trousers are invaluable in the later stages of pregnancy and once your baby has arrived.
Topshop have a variety of maternity jeans which look like normal jeans when worn with an oversized top.
9. It’s All About The Underwear
It is definitely worth buying maternity underwear: maternity bras, bra strap extenders (e.g. 3-pack £3.99 H&M) and comfortable underwear to be worn either above or below your bump.
Leonisa UK do some fabulous supportive shapewear for use in pregnancy and beyond.
10. Save, Save, Save!
Check out cheaper brands such as Primark and Matalan to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Both these labels offer up to the minute trends, colours and shapes which will give you a boost no matter what stage of pregnancy you are at.
In complete contrast the slow fashion, sustainability and not-buying-new movement may encourage you to check out your local charity shops. Often you can find great pre-loved pieces at bargain prices.
